I have had this MG Midget for about 11 years. For about half of that time it was my daily driver and much enjoyed. It had a bad winter after I moved up to Massachusetts (when I bought it I lived in Virginia) during which the car cover blew off of it in a snow storm. We got a ton of snow that day and therefore didn't realize the cover had come off until the spring when the snow melted making the car very very wet inside. Prior to that winter the car had some rust but less than one would expect considering the age. Now it has more and needs someone who can do body work to it. After the previously mentioned snow melt incident I moved to another house and have kept the MG in a clean dry garage since then.
When I bought it the PO had just had new carpets put in. They are still in fine shape. The PPO had put in a Weber carb which hopefully means something to someone. All I know is that he seemed pleased by this. The PPO is also the one who rigged it up so that the spare tire sits on the boot rather than in the boot. I think this is an extra cool, distinctive feature. Also of not is that is has the wire wheels and chrome bumbers. MG people will find this to be important information. We (my ex-husband and I) replaced the head gasket, cleaned the valves, replaced the slave cylinder for brakes, gave it a new horn, had the carburators tuned, and whatever else needed to be done to keep it on the road. Of course, this was over the course of the first 6 or 7 years that I owned it and aside from starting it up and putting a new battery in it last week little has been done since.
One of the consequences of the snow melt incident was that the place where the back of the convertible top attached to the car rusted out so that the top wasn't really attached back there. I removed the top completely and had the idea that I would just have a body shop smooth that area out and just skip having the top. Who would drive one of these things with the top up anyway?!?!? This means the top is not on the car but does come with the car and is in pretty good shape. I didn't include a picture but if it's important to someone let me know and I'll dig it out and post some. I think it was a new aftermarket top when I bought the car but it's obviously been used for some years since then.
Here's the condition now:
I put a new battery in it last week and it fired right up. The engine doesn't seem to have any stray noises and the transmission has no trouble shifting. The brakes are another matter, however. They do not work. I don't know why: they used to before it sat dormant. There is rust as evidenced by the pictures below. It's got rust underneath too (the snow was deep and the car is short) but I don't have pictures of that. I have driven it a couple of times from one driveway to another and aside from the lack of brakes it didn't feel any different than when I was driving it all the time. Most of the lights work. I have not investigated why not all of them work so I can't tell you if it's a bulb, fuse, or actual short.
I've tried to be as honest as possible about the condition of this car. It runs very well, shifts, very well, needs body work, does not have working brakes, and not all the lights work. It is 36 years old. It cannot be driven away (for the obvious reason) so the buyer would need to arrange a pickup.
Thanks for looking!
