With the IS300, Lexus submits its challenge to the German sports sedans. Using rear-wheel drive orientation, mated to an inline-6 cylinder engine and short front and rear body overhangs with the wheels pushed to the four corners, the IS300 shows that Lexus has developed a youthful, compact-class sports sedan aimed clearly at the market enamored with German sports sedans. Its tight handling traits with best-in-class power, combined with a high-tech interior with Lexus’ outstanding and high quality build quality shows that Lexus builds the best value in the segment.
This IS300 is a local trade-in and has spent its entire life in snow- and salt-free East Tennessee. This sedan is in good condition with no evidence of paint or bodywork. The Carfax History Report shows no accidents reported, no recalls and no title issues.
Paint in Lexus’ gray finish, the exterior of the IS300 is in good condition. There are a few very minor rock chips on the hood of the car but these do not detract in any way from the overall good appearance of this car. There are no dents, dings or scratches in the paint.
The wedge-shaped design of the IS300’s body shows a sculpted, athletic silhouette. The slick skin delivers a world-class aerodynamic rating of 0.20 Cd (coefficient of drag) that reduces wind noise and improves fuel economy.
The interior of the IS300 is in good condition. The leather seating has no tears, splits or stain. The leather materials are of high-quality and in good condition. Carpeted areas are clean with no heavy wear patterns or stains. The dash, windshield and window glass are all in good condition. There is a very small rock chip on the windshield.
In a departure from the typical soft-padded luxury Lexus interior, the IS300 cockpit is driver oriented, with machined metal, graphite-rimmed plastics and drilled aluminum pieces throughout. Tucked into the center of a rounded dash overhang, the instrument cluster features a round speedometer with smaller round gauges in the center, resembling a sports chronograph. The padded leather steering wheel houses finger buttons that allow the driver to shift up or down one gear at a time without his hands ever leaving the wheel.
Although a driver’s car, luxury pieces are not deleted from the IS300. Features include automatic climate control system, cruise control, power windows and door locks, eight-way heated power seats, heated outside power mirrors and power moonroof. The Lexus sound system includes AM/FM/Cassette/CD played through eight speakers.
Using the classic layout for sports sedan control, with the inline-6 driving power to the rear wheels, the IS300 manages to keep with chassis balanced and in control, with a 54/46 front-to-rear weight ratio. The 3.0 liter engine is powerful and torquey, delivering 215 horsepower and 218 pound-feet of torque. Lexus’ intelligent continuously variable valve timing system delivers outstanding performance while maintaining good fuel economy.
Acceleration is very good in this IS300. Cornering and stability is a statement to the taut chassis layout and very good suspension design and components. Braking is good and straight, with no vibration and very little brake fade. Four anti-lock disc brakes and electronic brakeforce distribution provide excellent control.
The Hankook 215/45ZR17 tires are new and are mounted on alloy wheels that are in good condition.
