Welcome to caliautobrokers Online Auctions.
Offered here exlusively is a rare Barn find Mcburnie FAUX 365 GTS Ferrari Daytona Spyder that is in need of some help(see below). The Mcburnie is the premier replica of the renown Ferrari Daytona. This special California vehicle has the potential to be very rewarding to the right new owner.
First, a bit of history on these legendary autombiles: Of course, with only 165 real Daytona Spyders made, and selling prices at one time topping $500,000(now over 1,000,000), living out one's Sonny Crockett fantasies behind the wheel simply wasn't a realistic ambition for most. Fortunately for Vice fans, a faux Daytona was available to fit the bill. The faux Ferrari boasts Corvette mechanicals and a celebrity pedigree. VETTE MAGAZINE
Photo above is the real deal. The Mcburnie look so close to the original that Ferrari himself came to the US to sue Mcburnie and end production of the Faux Daytonas.Ironically, the without the Mcburnie cars in Miami Vice the general public would not even be aware of the Ferrari Daytona.
But what do Miami Vice, vintage Ferraris, and Don Johnson have to do with Corvettes? you ask. Well, the Daytonas used on the show were actually C3 Corvettes fitted with new bodies and interior pieces to look like the real thing. They were constructed by specialty-car builder Tom McBurnie, of Thunder Ranch, in El Cajon, California. In the '80s complete cars sold, on average, for just under $50,000…That's still plenty pricey, but provided Ferrari looks were all you were after, the Thunder Ranch 'tona was a relative bargain. to a generation of loyal Miami Vice fans, Crockett's Daytona might as well have been the real deal. Real Ferrari emblems and taillights were used on the fiberglass body. For years there was no record of where the Miami Vice cars went. While there are still a number of Corvette-chassis Daytonas on the road today, these are becoming almost as rare as the real thing. Few Daytona kit builders still exist, and these offer a more limited selection of parts. But for diehard Miami Vice fans, there's still hope. It just takes time, money, and maybe a pastel sport coat. “ VETTE MAGAZINE. (above internet photo appears to be of Maimi Vice Mcburnie replicas)
This plaque permanantly affixed to the drivers door jamb attests to the fact that this special car was custom built by Mcburnie coachcraft. This is an original California Daytona Spyder. It is referenced by the internal Mcburnie number 78401471 and the car original Corvette vin 194671s118032. She was completed in march of 1986, during the height of the Maimi Vice era.
No doubt, this barn find will definitely need work. This project is not for the timid. The car has been sitting for many years after front end accident(see pics below) and is not running nor is it drivable. The condition of the Engine, transmission, brakes, steering, and suspension are unknown. The body has damage in the front (see below) and many paint imperfections and fading. The mileage showing 6197 may possibly be mileage since the conversion(not total actual miles on the car). The car has a lot of potential and could make a great weekend endeavor. The car will be sold strictly AS-IS WHERE-IS with clear California title (“1971 Chevrolet”).
These replicas were not cheap and the exterior of the car has many real Ferrari parts on it.
This special recreation features C3 Corvette chasis Chevrolet Big Block engine Automatic transmission Leather custom 2 tone interior Canvas convertible top Power steering Power brakes Power windows
vintage plates for photgraphic purposes
The body has sustained front end damage and of course will need repair.
Luckily, the previous owner picked up the pieces so that the body shop can use them in the repairs. The car does have front bumpers and damaged grill. Front Turn lenses are both gone. Parts from headlight assemblies missing. Windsheld is cracked(corvette replacement part).
After the incident, many of the remaining parts were carefully placed in the trunk. These should be of great help in resurecting this historic Mcburnie Daytona.
Dazzling replica wheels are tasteful recreations of the coveted “Borrani knock-offs” that graced only a fraction of the 165 Daytonas.
Real ferrari taillights add to the Daytona aura
Another unique feature only found on bonifide Mcburnie cars is the embossed logo that appears on the inside of the engine lid.
The car has a functioning convertible top that has a high grade canvas.
Car also comes with custom saddle boot cover for the top when its is down.
O6197 is mileage showing on the speedometer that was refitted by Mcburnie. That may possibly represent the mileage since the conversion in 1986. It is not the total milage on the car.
During the transformation in 1986 the interior was completely reupholstered with special two tone saddle and tobacco leather which has beautiful patina to it. the fact that it is not perfect adds to the cars mystique.
Nice touch and feel of a wooden period steering wheel.
Note the old school handcrafted leather and the signs of honest wear.
Nice looking engine bay occupied by Chevrolet Big Block. She has been sitting for some years and will without a doubt need rebuild. The engine of the special car is purported to be a high performance Chevrolet 454…1970 vintage. The automatic transmission is most likely a 400 turbo.
Engine number pictured here supposedly corresponds with a 450 horspower LS6 motor. Although I cannot guarantee nor verify if original or been restamped.
Picture yourself in a real Ferrari Daytona(above pic). Then picture yourself in your completed Mcburnie without having to spend a million plus!
This incredible barn find geniuine McBurnie Daytona could be a dream car. Yes, it is a replica but without Mcburnie and Miami Vice 'the average Joe on the street' would not even know what a Daytona was! Blue chip Ferrari looks but eats on Chevrolet budget. It will require effort to bring her back but it’s worth it. Here is very unique opportunity to own a recreation of a million dollar car for a very small fraction of the price. Imagine it sitting in your drive way! Questions call Evan 310 594 4224 (10AM-9PM pacific time)
